A hybrid between Vadfradad I and Vadfradad II
Lot 403
KINGS OF PERSIS. Autophradates (Vadfradad) I (?), early 2nd century BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 4.18 g, 2 h). Head of Vadfradad II to right, wearing diadem and kyrbasia. Rev. Fire-temple of Ahura-Mazda; above, half-figure of Ahura-Mazda to left; to left, King standing right, his hands raised in adoration; to right, eagle standing left on standard. Alram -, cf. 539/541 (for obverse) and 547 (for reverse). Sunrise -. Extremely rare and perhaps unpublished. A very interesting issue. Some minor scrapes, otherwise, good very fine.

This is a very unusual coin as it combines the portrait of Vadfradad I with a reverse that was only introduced by Vadfradad II. It is perhaps a posthumous mule, using an old obverse die of Vadfradad I in error
